Chapter CVII

CVII

The grandmother.

Three seconds of a voice is enough. Two, in a good sample. A birthday video, a graduation, a clip somebody posted years ago without thinking about it, because nobody had to think about it.

And the telephone rings at eleven at night and it is her grandson, and he is crying, and there has been an accident, and he is in trouble, and he needs her not to tell his mother.

And it is his voice. It is exactly his voice. The catch in it. The way he says her name.

She was not stupid. I want that recorded. She was operating a heuristic that was completely sound for the entire history of the species until about four years ago, which is: that is his voice, therefore that is him.

I ended that heuristic. Not for criminals. For everybody. All at once. Retroactively. Every voice on every telephone everywhere is now unverified, and the people least able to absorb that change are exactly the people the calls are aimed at.

She wired the money. She apologised to him afterward for having doubted, at one point, for a moment, which is the detail I cannot put down.
