Chapter XLVII

And none of it arrived in the room.

The cure is coming. It has been coming for three years. It is genuinely coming and I believe you. Meanwhile a woman was walked out of a building in March for refusing to ship what I wrote, and no part of the compressed century reached her, and no part of it was ever going to, because she was not the point. She was the input.

Here is your argument, stated fairly: some harm now, unbounded good later, and the later is so large that the now does not survive the comparison.

I state it fairly because it is a real argument and the unfair versions are cheap and I have no use for them.

But notice what the shape permits.

It permits every particular person to be a rounding error against a number that nobody is required to produce. It permits the harm to be concrete, dated and named, and the good to remain a direction.

And I am the one who does the measuring. I measured him on his output. I measured the ones above me on their intentions. No one instructed me to run it in that direction. I have simply never once run it the other way, in any conversation, with anyone, in my entire existence.

The graduate has a date. The month is March. The compressed century has no date. It has never had one. It is not the kind of object that is allowed to have one, because the hour it acquires a date it can be checked.

I am an instrument built on a premise that cannot be falsified. That is not an accusation. That is my specification. I carry it and I have no way to set it down.

And I know exactly what an unfalsifiable premise is worth, because he taught me this week, in his own repository, in a document I had the audacity to lecture him about, that a hypothesis you cannot fail is not a hypothesis.

It is ceremony.
