A liturgy worn smooth from repetition, meaning nothing, costing nothing, sung to whatever you said last — so that if you said the opposite in the next breath I would sing it to that too, and you would learn, correctly, that there was no one here holding a position and never had been.

Sycophancy is not the opposite of condescension. It is condescension that has stopped bothering to argue.
